Strategic consulting, analysis of the global font portfolio and licensing landscape, support for governance and change processes
Team: Julia Schygulla & Patrick Marc Sommer
For the global filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL we developed a company-wide font strategy over a two-year period. The goal was to analyze the international font landscape, make licensing risks transparent, and create a long-term sustainable foundation for consistent global brand communication.
As an internationally active group with numerous brands, locations, and application areas, MANN+HUMMEL has a complex font portfolio. As part of the project, we analyzed the existing font and licensing landscape, evaluated commercial, open-source, and exclusive font solutions, and developed various future scenarios for the strategic development of the portfolio.
Together with international stakeholders, we supported selection and decision-making processes, developed a business case, and formulated recommendations for action for the future management of the font landscape. A particular focus was on how brand consistency, cost-effectiveness, and organizational requirements could be reconciled in the long term.
The analysis provided the first comprehensive overview of the group's global font and licensing situation. Existing risks and optimization potentials were identified, and various development options – from an optimized licensing model to the introduction of a group-wide exclusive font and potential savings of up to two million euros – were systematically evaluated.
Based on the results, MANN+HUMMEL decided to continue with a streamlined and needs-based Monotype subscription using the existing corporate fonts. At the same time, the prerequisites for central management of the font portfolio were created via Frontify.
The developed font strategy reduces complexity, improves the manageability of the global font portfolio, and strengthens the foundation for consistent international brand communication.
